I was first introduced to Reiki when I was about 12 or 13 years old. I had suffered from very serious anxiety and depression and had tried all other means of medical help. I began having Reiki sessions regularly which really helped to balance my emotions and ease the anxiety. It was these sessions that helped me to see that there was light at the end of the tunnel. At the age of 15 I decided to study Reiki alongside my mum, Pauline. We did Reiki Level One in 1997 and in 1999 we completed Level Three and became Reiki Masters. We have used Reiki almost every day since then and I began practising Reiki professionally in 2009. Over the years I have learned other energy healing techniques but I always come back to Reiki. Every time I receive Reiki or give a Reiki session a deep sense of peace comes over me. It is such a relaxing energy and can have so many benefits to the mind, body & spirit. I love this beautiful healing energy. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Reiki. If you have any other questions or would like to book a Reiki session in person or by distance healing you can contact me here.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a combination of two Japanese words Rei and Ki meaning universal life energy. Reiki is a hand healing technique that uses the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki traces its roots back to what is now Tibet; originating around 3,000 B.C. and was ‘brought back’ by Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 1800s. Reiki is a natural healing method that uses the hands of a healer to channel energy to another person. It uses the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

Who should go for Healing?

Anyone can receive healing. It is non-evasive and complements medical treatment, natural therapies, and massage therapy. It draws on universal life energy to benefit people and animals of any age and in any state of health. It can be very helpful for children who may have difficulty concentrating. It will assist in their enjoying life, being more peaceful, & functioning in a more balanced and harmonious energy. I work with adults & children of all ages. I have also done Reiki on small babies who really seem to enjoy the soothing Reiki energy. Reiki is perfectly safe for pregnant women, and in fact, it’s very beneficial. The energy helps relieve many pregnancy-related discomforts, relaxes the mum-to-be and helps her sleep better, and is also good for the baby. The gentle Reiki energy helps on many levels. The great thing about Reiki is that you only receive as much energy as you need to receive.

What will I feel with a Healing Session?

If you observe an Energy Healing session, it might not seem like anything is happening.  But when you experience it, you will know different.  While the effects vary from individual to individual, most people experience deep relaxation and you may even fall asleep. The sensation felt by a recipient is usually a deep feeling of warmth or cool and comfort. Others feel a mild tingle, throbbing or pulsing sensation. Some experience a sensation of “floating” or of feeling very light. Some people don’t feel any physical sensation but describe mental or emotional changes, such as a sense of calmness or peacefulness. Nearly everyone experiences Energy Healing as deeply relaxing. Results are sometimes very subtle and gentle.  Some say they feel little during the session, but afterwards enjoy a sense of calmness and well-being, and a deep restful sleep. It is possible to experience powerful sensations or emotions during and/or after a session.  The practitioner will want to know about all of your experiences/sensations to the degree that you are comfortable sharing them. A session creates a wonderful, glowing radiance that is deeply relaxing and includes many “healing” effects for both the client and practitioner, including physical, emotional, mental or spiritual.

Will I feel different after Reiki?

I have noticed over the years that people will either feel very tired and relaxed or they may experience an increase in energy. You may not feel the effects of Reiki immediately; sometimes it can take a day or so for you to feel the full benefit. Always consult with your Reiki practitioner if you are not feeling well after a session. Many of my clients report that the energy builds up slowly after a session and they feel the full effects 2-3 days later.

What are the main benefits of Reiki?

Energy Healing treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. It speeds up the healing process and supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It strengthens the immune system, and improves the capacity of your body’s ability to clear toxins. Reiki removes energy blockages, adjusts the energy flow of the endocrine system bringing the body into balance and harmony.

spiritwise roomHow often should I have Reiki?

This is a question I get asked all the time and there is no one definitive answer. Healing with Reiki is a process, not an event, and varies from client to client. In general, acute problems will heal quicker than chronic issues. One Reiki session can produce feelings of deep relaxation and can reduce stress in the body & mind. If your problem is long standing or deep rooted it may require treatments over a longer period of time. I usually recommend my clients try 2 or 3 sessions over a number of weeks. Each person and situation is completely different, so it really depends on what you are going through in your life at the time. If you are experiencing major life changes or under a lot of stress you may need a couple of sessions in succession.

What should I wear to a Reiki treatment?

Wear something warm and comfy; your Reiki Practitioner should have a cosy room and a blanket to cover you during the session and it’s always nice to be in comfortable clothes so you can relax completely. You remove your shoes during a Reiki session so some of my clients like to bring their own woolly bed socks for extra warmth and comfort during the session.

Is there anything I can do to aid the Reiki healing process?

Reiki helps to detox your energy field and your physical body so drink plenty of water before and after your session to help aid this detox. You can also help detox the body with sea salt or Epsom salt bath, or foot bath. I recommend you do this after the Reiki session. It’s very helpful if you can ground your energy by going for a walk in nature or sit outside. Try to arrange your Reiki session at a time when you know you will have some peace and quiet just after.

What’s the difference between Energy Healing & Reiki?

Reiki is one type of energy work, but it isn’t the only one. There are many kinds of energy work available. They can all be helpful. Most Energy Healing & Balancing systems are very similar, the techniques used may vary slightly and each practitioner has their own unique style. I find that the results from any type of energy healing modality are so similar and have huge beneficial effects to the mind, body & spirit. Whilst Reiki is similar to this type of energy healing, Reiki uses a different ‘channel’ of healing. People often find Reiki a ‘softer’ energy. Every session with an individual is different.

Is Reiki a religion?

Reiki is not a religion.  Reiki healing requires an openness and readiness to heal, not a particular faith. It is very spiritual in nature, but there is no belief required in order to learn and use it. Reiki will work regardless of whether you believe in it or not, you just need to be open to it. In the course of my own Reiki practice, I have worked with Protestants, Catholics, Pagans, Agnostics, Hindus & Buddhists.

Tibetan BellAre there different types of Reiki techniques?

Yes there are many different types of Reiki healing. Tibetan Reiki, Sacred Path Reiki, Ascension Reiki, Tera Mai Reiki, Seichem, Karuna Reiki, Karuna Ki, , Extended Seichim Reiki, Isis Seichim, Traditional Japanese Reiki, and many more. I use the traditional model of Reiki.

Can Reiki be used with other therapies?

Yes. It can be combined with other complementary therapies very successfully. Reiki will enhance their effects. I have seen how Reiki can work incredibly well with homeopathy and massage.

Does insurance cover Reiki treatments?

Reiki is starting to be recognised by some insurance companies. While not many are covering Reiki treatments, some are. Check with your local insurance company for details.

I have heard it is possible to receive Reiki from a distance, is this true?

Yes it is. Distance healing is equally as effective as in person.  Reiki knows no boundaries. It even goes beyond distances. It’s the inherent nature of this natural energy that makes Reiki Distance Healing  possible. Reiki Distance Healing sessions are a highly convenient method of enhancing the quality of your life, and healing any spiritual, emotional and physical pain and injuries you may be suffering from. It’s power as a remote energy healing technique is equal to that of  Reiki hands-on energy healing treatments. Only relaxation and quiet awareness are needed to receive a Reiki healing, meditation and/or intense concentration are not necessary. Just last week I did Reiki for a person in USA while sitting in my Reiki room in Mayo, Ireland. When I spoke with my client after she described feeling the energy and feeling calmer, lighter and energised. I spoke with her a few days later and she could still feel the healing effects of the Reiki.

Can anyone learn Reiki?

Anyone can learn Reiki and receive benefit from it in all areas of their life. Reiki is easily learned and practised as self-care by anyone who is interested. Reiki is not taught in the way other healing techniques are taught. It is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master during an attunement process. The Reiki attunement  is a powerful spiritual experience. Reiki attunement is the process of opening yourself and your senses to embrace the ancient art of Reiki. It is a bonus if you are a person who is intuitive or psychic but it isn’t necessary. I teach Reiki and have taught people from all walks of life, from all different types of careers and age groups. Each person has a unique experience when being attuned to Reiki but everyone I have taught has described how it has changed their life for the better in many ways.

Do you get tired when you give a Reiki session?

Yes and no. Since Reiki is a channelled form of healing, I don’t use my own energy during the session but I can feel the effects of the energy flowing through me. This can be a little tiring from time to time.

Reiki energy is guided by a ‘Higher Power’ and works through me so therefore my energy doesn’t get drained from Reiki. In fact when you give Reiki you actually receive healing yourself. Sometimes I can take on my clients issues or become drained; this only happens on occasion as I make sure to protect my energy field and not get too involved in the process. It’s about calling in the Reiki energy and just allowing it to work through you. I teach my Reiki students how to do this in our Reiki attunement workshops.
